Founded by ex-pat Nick Marc as a forum to celebrate the best in new music as well as that of the past, TISWAS was the precursor to the current New York scene. Combining the ethos of indie, electro, new wave, dance remixes, new wave/post punk, bootlegs, 60s beats and soul shots on the dance floor as well as showcasing up and coming bands TISWAS established the blue print for the modern New York club as well as providing inspiration from Boston to Miami to Los Angeles.
Now with DJs Nick Marc, Spiky Phil and Jess at the helm TISWAS continues to be one of a kind!

TISWAS launched at the now defunct Coney Island High on St. Mark’s Place. Early performances from the likes of Spacehog, Bigmouth, Mini King, the Mooney Suzuki and Ronnie Spector as well as Nick’s innovative sets combining indie pop, garage and 60ies freak outs, soul and dance beats attracted an underground following. Moving to Don Hill’s, with the addition of host?DJ Justine D. TISWAS grew in stature attracting a veritable who’s who of the burgeoning NY music scene, hosting early shows from the likes of The Strokes, Interpol, Radio 4, Stellastarr*, Elefant, The Fever, Morningwood, The Sights, Longwave, The Stills amongst others. Guest DJs include Rory Philips (Trash! London), Too Many DJs, Tim Burgess (The Charlatans), Arthur Baker, Tommie Sunshine, Stretch Armstrong, Andy Rourke (The Smiths) and Ash firmly established TISWAS as the premier and original New York indie rock and roll party!
TISWAS with Nick Marc now joined fellow Brit Spiky Phil moved east taking up residency at The Annex on New York City's Lower East Side where they were joined by DJ Jess in early 2008. After a short stay at The Studio TISWAS has returned to Don Hill's as a monthly party where it continues to thrive and has now launched a no cover weekly addition Thursday nights at The Beauty Bar in the East Village.
Nick is also the founder Tiswas Productions Inc. signing and releasing records from The Realistics, Stellastarr*, Skyrocket & The Twenty Twos, with both Stellastarr* and The Twenty Twos being picked up by RCA and Epic respectively. Tiswas Records will be releasing London based Operahouse's US debut EP in the spring of '09.
nick marc
NICK MARC grew up in the shadows of London developing a love of music at an early age. Disillusioned with London Nick found his way to NYC finding work as a DJ and soon found himself spinning at shows for the likes of Iggy Pop, the Dickies, Spacehog and Nada Surf as even finding himself sharing decks with childhood hero Joey Ramone. Frustrated with the limitations of being a hired DJ Nick founded the now legendary TISWAS party which quickly established itself as the premier indie/dance party in NYC.
For over 10 years Nick has been a mainstay of the New York club scene with many crediting him for advancing the indie party in not just NYC but in the USA as a whole. He has manned the decks at such legendary spots as Wax, Sway, Spa, Life, Coney Island High, Hiro Ballroom, Spy, CBGBs, Don Hill's and Webster Hall. Teaming up with fellow Brit Spiky Phil, TISWAS 2.0 finally re-launched in March 2006 at The Annex on the Lower East Side before returning to Don Hill's on a monthly basis where once more it attracts a loyal following and continues to bring the best in new music and artists to an appreciative crowd. Nick has a Friday night residency at The Rose Bar at Ian Schrager's Gramercy Park Hotel. During the past 10 plus years Nick Marc has shared the decks with many name DJs from Arthur Baker, Mylo, Tommie Sunshine, Peter Hook (New Order), Martin Gore (Depeche Mode), Andy Rourke (The Smiths), Stretch Armstrong, Too Many DJs, Rory Philips (Trash! UK), Tim Burgess (The Charlatans), David J (Bauhaus, Tones On Tail, etc.), Goldie, Junior Senior amongst others, his corporate clients have included Ben Sherman, FHM, Blender, Beefeater, Tommy Hilfiger, Dazed and Confused, EMI and Yellow Rat Bastard.
Nick Marc is also an avid soccer fan and also enjoys traveling -- especially to tropical islands, movies, reading and sleeping in late!
spiky phil
A born and bred Londerer Spiky Phil was a regular in the club scene by the time he was teenager eventually leading to a gig manning the door at Erol Alkin's legendary night Trash! Having conquered London Phil turned his attentions to the US eventually moving to NYC. Finding work as a DJ he made a name for himself eventually leading to partnering with Nick Marc at TISWAS where he continues to lay down the soundtrack to debauchery every night!
Phil also plays drums in the NYC based Calypso

dj jess
By all means, DJ Jess should be dead. The abandoned factory towns of old New England left him soured and delinquent, with nothing to hold onto to but an abused copy of The Anarchist's Cookbook, and nothing to look forward to but another shoplifting spree at the local Wal*Mart. Feeling shackled by his small town's 1950s mentality and total lack of humour, he desperately saved his pennies and clung to the side of the first train bound for NYC he could get his mitts on.
Instantly finding work as a DJ in the seedy and suspicious corners of the downtown club scene, he soon found himself catering to the persnickety tastes of troubled brit-poppers, juvenile new wavers, electro psychotics, and emotionally turbulent indie rockers. Realizing that melody reigns over genre, he found that with the right amount of grace, flow, and wit, he could get people slam-dancing to MGMT and subsequently have them moon-walking to Morrissey. He's presided over decks at every hipster party of note, including TRASH!, Motherfucker, MisShapes, Rated-X, NC-17, and the legendary TISWAS party
